June 2013, Dubai -- "Procurement is a commercial function that can add value in many areas but it requires procurement teams to evaluate the people, processes and physical outcome within their work to change this perception. In my experience people are key – if they understand the business they understand the demands and where best to add value and influence it". Stewart Morrison, Head of Commercial IMEA, Americas, APAC, Eurasia, UAE, Nokia Corporation stated in an interview about his opinion on Procurement Management in the Middle East.
Stewart Morrison will be discussing on how procurement can be pursued as a commercially integrated function at the Procurement Management Summit between 17-18 September 2013 at the Amwaj Rotana Hotel, Dubai. When we asked him to express his views on the the issues in procurement management he stated; "There is a perception that procurement is a slow, administrative box ticking exercise done by people who do not understand the demands of business" he further went on to state that the lack of fairness in selection supplies is not in the best interest of the business and that of the employee. Highlighting the issue on suppliers, key topics will also address how to strategically approach suppliers and how can businesses meet suppliers needs.
He also spoke about the latest technologies adopted by Nokia for efficient operations in procurement, "We use a variety of tools for selection and enforcing supplier usage. E-tools such as the use of eRFi's, eRFP's and e-auctions are effective sourcing tools that allow the users to run the pitch process online that enables all stakeholders a live and easily accessible view of the status of pitches. It also helps to run the pitches in a format that can be standardized making comparisons of proposals easy to read. Following on from the selection process we use vendor approval and set up tools to load suppliers on to the purchasing system which enables sourcing to approve every supplier and grade them for preference i.e. preferred, restricted etc."
The conference also sees support by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply(CIPS). Leaders from various sectors ranging from Oil and Gas (Rasgas, ADCO), Manufacturing (Emirates Steel, DUBAL), FMCG (Tiriyaki Agro, Pepsi Cola), Transport (Etihad Rail), Infrastructure (Qatar Foundation), Public Sector (Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation) and others will gather for two days at Dubai to bring awareness about the concept of procurement management within the supply chain.
The Procurement Management Summit is supported by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Attendees to this two day conference will be accredited by CILT with 3CPD hours, certified by the institute for their participation.
